My Five Favorite
Christmas Movies
I love the holiday season…well, most of the time. When you
have young children who believe wholeheartedly in the magic of Santa and a
husband who’s always working and never home (this was me a few years ago), it’s
exhausting work. You gotta make that magic happen for fear of disappointed
children on your hands.
It’s not as bad now. My children are older. They don’t come
right out and say it but I’m pretty sure they’re over the whole Santa thing.
The husband is home more often and a huge help. When it gets a little stressful
though, I always enjoy settling in and watching a favorite Christmas movie.
Here are my favorites in no particular order:
1. Christmas Vacation – Of course. Who doesn’t love the Griswolds and all of their holiday mayhem? I love how realistic (if a tad over exaggerated) the movie is. Family coming for the holidays is both stressful and fun. All of that tradition you want to make happen no matter what. The annoying relatives who come over and make themselves at home…I adore this movie. It makes me laugh every time I watch it.
2. Elf – I love that a fairly new movie as
established itself very quickly as a classic. At least in my family’s eyes it’s
a classic. Will Farrell is amazing as Buddy the Elf who’s like a big kid full
of wonder over the magic of Christmas. He’s so sweet and funny. My favorite
scene is when he’s working at the department store and the fake Santa comes in.
He’s horrified because that dude is NOT Santa. My kids love this movie too.
3. The Grinch who Stole Christmas – This stems back
from my childhood. The Jim Carrey version is fine but I prefer the animated
version. In the third grade I was one of the narrators of The Grinch. We
performed a play in front of the entire school. I always liked the dog. Poor
dude, stuck with the grinchy Grinch.
4. A Christmas Story – Can’t not mention this one
right? Does TNT still show it for 24 hours straight? I bet they do. Favorite
line from this movie: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Plus, I love it when the dad
thinks the package is from Italy because it says “fra-gee-lay” aka fragile.
Hahahahahah….
5. The Family Man – Even though this movie isn’t
strictly around Christmas, it starts off during Christmas and I love it. It’s a
romance about second chances and Nicolas Cage does a great job portraying a man
who can’t believe he went from high rolling businessman to family man selling
tires in the blink of an eye. Doesn’t everyone question their lives at one
point? Do a bit of ‘what if’ pondering? That’s exactly what this movie is
about…
