Audiobook: Deadly Obsession by Katie Reus (Review)

A couple weeks ago I had a chance to listen to Deadly Obsession by Katie Reus. Okay this has been sitting my audible collection for sometime, and I'm finally getting to it. I wanted a little suspense in my life. Oh man, the bad guy is super creepy and a freak. I honestly didn't know who the dude was till the end. However, he was one messed up kind of dude who had an obsession for Lily Carmichael.

Now Lily is suffering from PTSD, and is trying to cover her issues. By the way this got on my nerves and the reason she left the area. How she handled the situation was pretty messed up when she broke up with Braden Donnelly. She should have told him and let him believe her or been dick. We don't know what he would have done, because she never gave him a chance.

Basically, she comes home for her aunt's funeral, and a bunch of things start to happen that put her life in danger. Of course this draws Lily and Braden together. They try to figure out what the heck is going, and at the same time solve a problem that has been bugging Braden.

Lily kind of bugged me, because she had this need to prove that she can do it on her own attitude. I get that she wanted to prove that she was strong, but it drove me nuts. I like Braden, because he had a good head on his shoulders. Plus, he didn't want to get hurt by Lily again, after all he did get burned.

Okay, the story was super creepy. The narrator, Eliza Foss, does an amazing job with this story. There were times I was glad I was listening to the story during the day. She was able to capture each of the characters voice. The villain's voice still creeps me out. She would be someone I would be willing to listen read another suspense story.

Overall, I liked Deadly Obsession. I had to listen to the story, and I wanted to know who the killer was. However, this is an older Katie Reus book, and it might not have the same feel as her newer books. I still enjoyed the story, and would be willing to listen to it again.

Mutiny of the Heart by Jennifer Bray-Weber (Review)

Today I bring you a swashbuckling tale called Mutiny of the Heart by Jennifer Bray-Weber. Seriously, I love using that word, anyway. In this tale we find pirates. YAY! However, what the blurb doesn't tell you is there is a love-triangle. What, what, what! Do you know I detest a love-triangles? Here's why you always get a loser. Granted it's a great lead to a new story, but it's an emotional drainer. It just wreaks havoc on a person. Don't get me wrong the story is good, but it's a love-triangle.

Lets meet the key players in the story:
We have Captain Joelle Quint who wants to figure this mystery her left so long ago. Some may believe it's crazy that she continues to search for it, but it's her last connection to her father.

Sloan Ricker the slave who was bought by Joelle. Yet he has a skill she needs. For exchange of helping her figure out the map she will offer him his freedom. Sounds like a good trade.

We have Valeryn who is jealous of Sloan cause he's taking Joelle's attention away from him. He's in love with Joelle, but he kind of burned sometime ago. Good job lover boy, so now he has competition. Let's not forget he's the first mate.

So, we have a lady pirate, a slave boy, and a first mate. Of course Sloan and Valeryn are two alpha males circling around each other most of the book.

Aside from the love-triangle the story is pretty good. We find a lot of action in Mutiny of the Heart, and actually it's the battles that grabbed my attention more than the love story. Then again the love-triangle issue. I just couldn't wrapped my brain with the idea with Joelle still having feelings for Valeryn after learning what he had done to her. There shouldn't have been a real choice when it came to choosing between Sloan and Valeryn. However, she still had feelings for Valeryn. Mutiny of the Heart is a good story if you love pirates and love-triangles. I love one out of the two things. Even with the love-triangle I did like the ending, and it was a feel good kind of ending.

No Apologies by Sybil Bartel

First let me say why I wanted to read No Apologies by Sybil Bartel, it was mainly cause of the cover. The cover is amazing and the is yummy. I mean look at those abs. Yes, I wanted to read this for a superficial reason. Now I need to share my thoughts.

Honestly, I struggle with No Apologies. I really didn't have a problem with Graham being a manwhore. I mean it's his prerogative to be one, after all he's a musician and he's living up the benefits. However, I he was moody and an a-hole. I think if he was more charming, I would be more forgiving for his manwhore behavior. He's not, and he's a hard character to love and he has no qualms being an a-hole.

You kind of get to know Carly. Yes, she's a bartender at a bar that Graham frequents, and likes to see her. Graham has these lusty feelings for her, but senses that he should stay away from. I guess that's one of Graham's good quality, but he can't seem to stay way. As you read the story, you learn that Carly is a wounded character, so I can understand  her skittish nature.

No Apologies is written from Graham POV. I do like when it's from a male POV. However, the story is not a cheery one, it's pretty dark and gritty. Graham outlook on life is pretty grim. All he focuses on is tapping whatever chick crosses his path and shoving them out the door when he's done. If you don't mind an a-hole guy who's a bit of a manwhore with a chip on his shoulder, this is a book for you. Yes,  he does develop some redeeming qualities, but just not enough to balance a-hole persona at the beginning of the book. This is just my thoughts on the story, and it just didn't work for me. I know it has worked for the others and I'm glad they enjoyed it.

Tasty Book Tour Review + Giveaway: Cloaked in Danger by Jeannie Ruesch

Cloaked in Danger
By: Jeannie Ruesch

Blurb
Aria Whitney has little in common with the delicate ladies of London society. Her famous father made his fortune hunting archaeological treasures, and her rustic upbringing has left her ill-prepared for a life of parties and frippery. But when Gideon Whitney goes missing, Aria must embrace the unknown—armed with only the short list of highborn men who’d backed her father’s venture, she poses as a woman looking for a husband. She doesn’t intend to find one.

Adam Willoughby, Earl of Merewood, finds London’s strangest new debutante fascinating, but when he  catches her investigating his family’s secrets, he threatens to ruin her reputation. He doesn’t intend to enjoy it so much.

When their lustful indiscretion is discovered, Adam finds that he regrets nothing. But now, as her father’s enemy draws near, Adam must convince his betrothed that she can trust him with her own secrets…before it’s too late.

— New York Times Bestselling Author Brenda Novak

My Thoughts:

I'm not going to lie, but I wanted to read Cloaked in Danger for a few reasons: 1) The cover. I have time and time again, I do love a beautiful cover. Yes, I will be persuaded to read a book, because of a cover. 2) The title. I absolutely love the title (and possibly the font too).  3) The story idea. I do love a story with an unusual heroine. I do favor heroines with backbones, bluestocking tendency, or boarding social outcast. Aria does have a bluestocking streak, and is boarding social outcast. However, with a father who is in good standings with the ton helps her from being a social outcast.

I did like Aria's devotion to search for her father and how she went about it. Yes, it was quite clever of her to go out into society and search for answers. However, I found her a bit naïve, when it came to  searching for answers. She needed a lot of help navigating through the ton, but she was determine do this on her own. Commendable, but not the smartest thing to do. She ends up getting compromise by the Earl of Merewood, Adam.

Poor Adam. I kind of feel bad for the guy, because he's trying to ensure his sister are safe and happy and trying to focus on getting them married off before he pursues a bride. Then he gets practically leg-shackled to Aria, because of her stubbornness. I like that he's trying to do the right thing for his family and Aria, but he just tends to fixate the tiny details. I think sometimes he just needs a chill pill.

The story was okay. The beginning felt a little slow to me, but once Adam and Aria find themselves in a compromising situation the story starts to progress pretty fast. There search was starting to petered out, then bam something happens that causes tension in my stomach. My gut was in a knot for rest of the book. I started to wonder how the outcome would be.

All-in-all, Cloaked in Danger a pretty good read. I liked the story well enough, but there were a few things I would have been fine without. I did like how the author didn't make a sugar coat happy ending where it magically became all better, because everything worked out. I liked that Aria went through a dark period and try to cope with all that had happen. However, I think I would have been more content had there been an epilogue with a little sugarcoating.

Jeannie Ruesch wrote her first story at the age of the six, prompting her to give up an illustrious, hours-long ambition of becoming a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and declare that writing was her destiny. Her first novel, a fairy-tale like historical romance, was published in 2009, but the darker side of life had always captivated her. So after a dinner conversation with friends about the best way to hide a dead body, she knew she had to find a way to incorporate suspense into her writing. (The legal outlet for her fascination.) Today, she continues writing what she loves to read - stories of history, romance and suspense. She lives in Northern California with her husband, their son and an 80 pound lapdog lab named Cooper.
