Texas Hold 'Em Blog Tour (Interview with Kay David)

Today I have with me Kay David the author of Texas Hold 'Em. So, I would like y'all to welcome Kay to What I'm Reading.

What made you decided to become an author?
I’ve been a writer all my life.  When I sold my first book, my father presented me with a very special present.  It was a half-dozen or so pieces of paper, maybe 2” x 2”.  They’d been stapled together and folded to look like a book.  On the front was scrawled “My First Book.”  Sure enough, I’d written it as a child.  I think the story was about ponies!

What kind of books do you like to read?
I’m a huge fan of romantic suspense, of course, but I also go for straight suspense.  I also really enjoy apocalyptic fiction.  Don’t ask me why because I don’t know.  I’ve always loved reading it though.  Something about the end of the world fascinates me.

Who are your favorites you like to go?
My critique partners always tell great stories; Amanda Stevens, Heather MacAllister, and Olivia Drake.  Deb Webb is great for suspense and of course, BJ Daniels for western romance.  Other than romances I also enjoy Tom Connolly, Vince Flynn,  and Michael Connelly. (I apparently have a thing for writers named Connolly/Connelly.)   I’ve really enjoyed some European writers lately, too, like Tana French, S.J Bolton, Jo Nesbo.

Where did the concept of the Smokin’ Aces come from?
I love the bad boy/Alpha male/LEO hero, and who’s ‘badder’ than a motorcycle man?  I was on the treadmill pounding away and surfing on my IPAD (Oh, yeah, and the TV was also on!) and somewhere in the middle of all that, I caught the image of a man on a motorcycle.  The idea came to me instantly; why not combine the ultimate bad boy with the ultimate Alpha male with the law enforcement officer?  The stories were easy to figure out once I had the concept.

For those who haven’t gotten a chance to read Texas Hold ‘Em could you share what’s it about?
TEXAS HOLD ‘EM is a love story between Timothy Santos, the leader of a covert Texas Ranger unit,  and Rose Renwick, a west Texas sheriff and his former lover. Santos is searching for a confidential informant who has disappeared under his watch and because of who she is, only Rose can help him locate the agent.  The overall arc of the series is about a search for a dangerous cartel leader and the men and women who are looking for him—the Smokin’ ACES, an undercover Texas Rangers team, posing as a rogue motorcycle gang.

What makes the hero and heroine so special in this story?
I enjoy exploring the dynamics between two people who have loved each other, parted, then come together again.  I think the ability to overcome adversary and reconnect is a fascinating and powerful thing.  Rose and Santos do this.  That takes intelligence, a sense of humor, and humbleness.

Since the hero rides a Harley, do you by any chance ride one too?
I wish!  But no, I don’t have one.  Maybe some day.

Whose story will be next in the Smokin’ Aces series? Can you share a little bit about what is to come next in the series?
All the story titles refer to the names of certain poker games, so the next one is  called FOLLOW THE COWBOY.  I can’t tell you the names of the hero/heroine because it might spoil TEXAS HOLD’EM for you!  I’ll just say this one involves a member of Smokin’ ACES and a local resident who’s introduced in TEXAS HOLD ‘EM.  Murders, more secrets, and even hotter Texas nights!

Last question. If you were to write your own autobiography what would your title be?
What a great question—and a really tough one, too.  Maybe I can ask my readers that question. They know what I write and a little bit about me (Texas gal who lives in the big city and has always wanted to write and loves to read) What do you guys think? Give me some ideas!

A bit about the novel Texas Hold 'Em:
Part law enforcement. Part criminal. And all deliciously bad…
Working undercover as part of an elite team of Rangers disguised as the Smokin’ ACES biker gang, Timothy Santos walks the thin line between law-enforcer and law-breaker. With one of his informants missing—and possibly dead—at the hands of vicious cartel leader El Brujo, Santos will do whatever it takes to find justice. Even if it means heading to Rio County to look up his former lover…who’s not only the sheriff, but Santos’s only lead.
Rose Renwick is not happy to see Santos. In the past, their chemistry had been explosive—raw, sensual, and unforgettable—but she’d been burned. Now Santos is back in town, looking just as lethal and as irresistible as she remembered. But Santos wants something from her—and suddenly Rose’s family is in danger and her town is under attack. The only way out is to trust the one man she swore never to trust again. Ante up...
