The Likelihood of Lucy by Jenny Holiday (Review)

Last week I was able to read The Likelihood of Lucy by Jenny Holiday. First off, The Likelihood of Lucy isn't like anything I have read lately. So, we have Lucy Greenleaf and Trevor Bailey, and they grew up in the slums and were able to manage to get out of there. Not an easy task, but they manage. Years later they reunite and happy ever after. Okay, that didn't happen. Lets dive into my thoughts and feelings about The Likelihood of Lucy.

All right, first off Lucy. Lucy is a reformer. She would love to see more rights given to women instead of being viewed as a mans property. She loves the works of Mary Wollstonecraft. Teaching young girls of lords about equality isn't probably the best thing to do if you are trying to stay a governess. Anyway, she gets sack by her last employer and ends up on the doorstep of Trevor's upcoming hotel.

Trevor escaped the slums by being a solider and working his way. He did fairly well and was able to obtain influential friends that help him start his hotel idea. So, when Lucy shows up on his door it kind of throws him off. However, he has always been protective of Lucy and is willing to help her, because he's the one that got her out of the slums.

That's when the story starts to take off. I like that you got to see flashbacks of their childhood, so you were able to get an understanding of where they were coming from. Both of them had their own focuses, Lucy with her social reform and Trevor with his hotel. The first half of the story focuses a lot on Trevor getting the hotel off the ground. So, I felt the story drag a little at this point. I wasn't feeling that there was a romantic connection between Lucy and Trevor, friendship yes. It wasn't until the middle of story when we realize that Trevor might have more deeper feelings cause enters possible competition. Truthfully wasn't a real competition, because Lucy had this idea that being married would make her less that a person. When I felt that the romance start to build was when the element of danger enter the picture. So, the last half focuses on spies and plot to stop an assignation on a person. That's when the story turned a tad bit more interesting.

Overall, it was a good story. Some parts could have moved a little faster for my taste. However, it was something different from your typical historical romance. We didn't focus on some lord trying to seduce a young lady. Nope, we got two people who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks trying to change the world. So, if you are in the mood for something a little different from a typical historical, you might consider The Likelihood of Lucy.
