Blog Tour: Season for Scandal by Theresa Romain (Interview + Giveaway)

I would like you all to welcome Theresa Romain the author of Season for Scandal to What I'm Reading.

How are you doing and thank you for stopping by today?
Hi, Melody! Thanks for letting me join you today. It’s great to visit your online home.

I have notice that your Season books tend to center around Christmas, how come that particular holiday?
There are two answers to this question. The first is that publishers usually release special books for Christmas, but not really for any other holiday. Maybe you’ll see a few paranormal romances for Halloween, or a Valentine’s romance here and there. But for the most part, Christmas is the holiday that gets special stories.

So that’s the answer from the publishing side! As for why I came up with a Christmas-oriented series, that happened by chance. My first historical romance, SEASON FOR TEMPTATION, had some Christmas scenes in it, and my editor thought it would work as a Christmas story. From there, it was a natural fit to write more in the same vein.

In Season for Scandal, we focus on Jane Tindall and Edmund Ware, could you tell us a little about them?
Ohhh, this poor couple. Jane has been in love with Edmund as long as she can remember, because he’s a really kind person. But that kindness is almost a compulsion with him: he’s burdened by dark secrets, and he tries to flee them by helping everyone around him, distracting himself, walling off his heart. When financial troubles drive him and Jane into a marriage of convenience, Jane realized that being married to the man she loves isn’t the easy happily-ever-after she hoped, and Edmund learns that he can’t spend his life without love.

What makes these characters special to you?
They’re special to me because their story is the reverse of a lot of romances: it begins with the wedding, and then they’re separated. They find their way to happily-ever-after by struggling together and getting to know one another in an honest and genuine way. Lots of romance readers are married or in serious relationships, and I think that kind of struggle might be familiar to them.

If Jane and Edmund had to describe each other, how would they respond?
In SEASON FOR SCANDAL, Edmund describes Jane as “bloodthirsty and ingenious,” and she thinks this is an excellent compliment. With a roll of her eyes, Jane would say that Edmund is kind to everyone.

What’s your favorite Christmas tradition?
I think of something different every year! My husband and I have a young daughter, and we love to rediscover traditions through her eyes. A few years ago, she first helped decorate a tree with ornaments. Last year, she was old enough to roll out and decorate Christmas cookies. So in a nutshell, my favorite tradition must be spending time with my family doing special holiday activities.

Would you consider writing another series focusing on a different holiday?
I’d never say never, though (as I mentioned above) it might not be possible to focus a series on it. But other holidays can still become part of a story. I’ve read historical romances featuring regional celebrations, midsummer festivals, street fairs—so many different ways of celebrating. Those holidays can help give a story a clear sense of place and time in history, which I love as a reader.

Do you have any other projects going on at this time and are you able to share?
Sure, thanks for asking. I’m writing another historical romance series called “the Matchmaker trilogy,” which aren’t Christmas books. The first of these, IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE, was published last month, and the second—TO CHARM A NAUGHTY COUNTESS—will be out in May 2014. Lots of deadlines to juggle, but I love being busy.

My last question; if you had to write your on autobiography what would you title your story and why?
Ha! I’d have to call it “Where Did the Time Go?” Between book deadlines, my other job, and my family responsibilities, it seems like I’m always running behind.

Thank you for stopping by today, would there anything else you would like to add before you leave us today?
Thanks again for hosting me! And a big thank-you to my readers, who make more books possible.

UNLADYLIKE RISK
Jane Tindall has never had money of her own or exceptional beauty. Her gifts are more subtle: a mind like an abacus, a talent for play-acting—and a daring taste for gambling. But all the daring in the world can’t help with the cards fixed against her. And when Edmund Ware, Baron Kirkpatrick, unwittingly spoils her chance to win a fortune, her reputation is ruined too. Or so she thinks, until he suggests a surprising mode of escape: a hasty marriage. To him. On the surface, their wedding would seem to satisfy all the demands of proper society, but as the Yuletide approaches, secrets and scandals turn this proper marriage into a very improper affair.

Meet Author Theresa Romain:

Historical romance author Theresa Romain pursued an impractical education that allowed her to read everything she could get her hands on. She then worked for universities and libraries, where she got to read even more. Eventually she started writing, too. She lives with her family in the Midwest, where she is working on her next book. This September, she’ll begin a new historical romance trilogy with IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE. In October, her third holiday historical romance—SEASON FOR SCANDAL—will be released.

    1. Hi, Linda--the Matchmaker trilogy is underway with the release of IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE last month! In these books, the hero and heroine try to matchmake for each other but are brought together with a little help from a happily-married matchmaking countess. Book 2 will be out next May!

  5. Congratulations on the new release. Christmas books are already out. This year has gone so fast.

Matchmaking can be a fun plot. Did you ever read Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips? It was a humorous take on fixing someone up, but that person has exacting standards.

  6. Theresa, as a mother I have to agree that the best traditions are the ones stated with you own children.
