Whether as
spies or lovers, the Renegade Royals—illegitimate sons of England’s Royal
Princes—are bold, skillful, and a force to be reckoned with…
A war hero returned from Waterloo should be able to
indulge in a bit of bad behavior. Instead, Captain William Endicott is summoned
by his father, the Duke of York, to investigate an assassination plot. The
unlikely suspect: William’s former sweetheart. Will can’t believe that innocent
Evie Whitney could be mixed up in anything so nefarious. Then again, almost
everything about Evie has changed—except for his body’s instinctive response to
hers…
Just as Evie’s life is finally coming together, Will
saunters back into it. Should she slap him—or seduce him? Even as she tries to
decide, scandal pushes her toward marriage with a man she can neither trust nor
resist—and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy…
I got a chance to read How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy by Vanessa Kelly. First off, I did like the story, but it sometime to get into the story. Actually quite a bit of time. I get that there was a need to build the story, and Will and Evie had to reestablish a connection after all they did have a falling out. Basically, Will pops back into Evie's life about the time she was going to get married to Michael Beaumont. However, there is a possible problem with Michael that Evie doesn't know about and he could be tied in with an assassination plot. To top that all off, Evie might be guilty by association.
Basically, the first half of the book Will is trying to establish whose really involved with the situation. So, it's kind of slow and drawn out. At this point I like the story, but there isn't a lot fueling the romantic situation between Will and Evie. A lot of that has to do with Evie trying to convince herself that she's going to marry Michael and be happy. Yeah, that sounds real promising there. Fortunately, Will has the help of Evie's mother and ends of in a compromising situation. That's when the story starts to pick up steam and gets interesting. The investigation gets on it's way, and we have a problem popup here and there.
Now the characters. I like Will. He's a pretty standup guy. Yeah, he kind of lied to Evie, but was to protect her and part of his job. Being a spy makes it a challenge to give full disclosure on things. Anyway. Evie, I thought she was a twit. She was so use to trying to please everyone, that she got tired of it and decided she had enough and she was going to do her own thing. This is what got her in trouble. Even her twin sister try to reason with her at times. She just got on my nerves.
Overall, How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy was good. Yes, I struggle with some of the story, but it did get interesting. I actually found Alec (Will's cousin) and Eden (Evie's twin) interaction with what was going on entertaining. I can see that there story is going to be a fun one, because they just rub each other the wrong way in this story.
Here's the bottom line if you are patient and willing to stick it out at the beginning, you will be rewarded with some action towards the end.

Thanks for your honest review. I have to agree with you on some of the stories like this one. It does take some time to build the backbone of the story to bring it all together towards the end. That can be boring. As long as the author does a good job wrapping things up, all is forgiven IMHO!
ReplyDeletelove Vanessa!

ReplyDeleteI like extensive background story...a build up, if you will...to the resolution of a mystery or puzzle. It also provides a build up to the romance, which is foreplay :-) When it all gets wrapped up at the end it makes for an intriguing love story! Thanks for the post. jdh2690@gmail.com
