Audiobook Review: Nobody's Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Truth be told, I actually listened to Nobody's Baby But Mine last year, but I felt that should probably re-listen to the story before I wrote my thoughts. Which I'm glad. I love that Susan Elizabeth Phillips writes about strong, smart women. They definitely make an impression. Especially Dr. Jane Darlington. Now Jane has hit a rough patch in life. She felt that she was probably too smart for her own good. As a child, she was a bit precocious, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, she didn't have anyone to guide her, so when she hatched this hair brain idea about finding a dumb jock she thought she was doing some good to her unborn child. She decided that Cal Bonner would be the ideal candidate. Boy was she wrong that account.

Anyway, when they first get together is pretty awkward. I didn't realize how awkward it was until the second time I heard the story.
Well, Jane's plan goes out the door when Cal finds out she's having his baby. He feels duty bond to marry Jane, but has no desire to make a real marriage. Oh boy, was the beginning so rocky. However, we see Cal start to develop feelings for Jane, but he doesn't know how to handle it. Not pretty. There's usually a lot going on in SEP books, and this is where we meet Kevin Tucker. Gotta love Kevin Tucker. The story is pretty entertaining once we getting going.

SEP books can make you have your emotions go all over the place, and Nobody's Baby But Mine is no exception. You are going to be all over the place with this story, but by the end you have all the feel goods you need. If you are in the mood of finding a crazy story that leads you to the path of love you might want to try this one.

Since this was an audiobook, Anna Fields does and amazing job reading this. She's one of my favorite narrators.

Audiobook Review: It Had to Be You by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

There will be some slight spoilers, but they are required for It Had to Be You. Let me start that I have been hopping around through the  Chicago Stars stories for a little while, and I have decided to read them in order. I love the newer stories, so now I'm going to start from the beginning and work my way to the end. With that, I do like Dan Calebow later in the series. However, had I started with this one I probably would have ripped his head off. Dan isn't the most pleasant guy in this story, especially with Phoebe Somerville. There was a lot of work that had to happen between these two characters.

I truly almost stopped reading It Had to Be You, and I had to mustered through a scene. I seriously thought Dan picked up a 16 year old girl, but it was his ex-wife who was into roll playing. Definitely a WTF moment. I'm glad he felt disgusted by this, but he didn't feel that disgusted after all he slept with his ex-wife. Anyway, he had an epiphany that he wanted to settle down and find the perfect wife, which he meets Sharon. By the way I totally forgot her last name, and I only remember her with a different last name cause later in the series you see her again married to someone else. However, Dan thought Sharon was perfect person to marry, but he can't stop lusting after Phoebe.

Let's be honest Phoebe is a hot mess at the beginning. She's trying to discover herself, while still trying to get her dead dad's approval. Let's throw in a moody teenage half-sister who doesn't even like her. She has a lot on her plate and her father try to set her up for failure. Thanks dad. However, I did like Phoebe. I even felt bad for her when her backstory came to life. As the story progresses she eventually finds her true self. However, it's a good portion of the story. I do love the friendship she develops with Ron McDermott, which puzzles Dan.

After a few of the scenes in It Had to Be You pass I actually liked this story. I love how the football players stood up for Phoebe. She did develop a special relationship with Stars. The relationship between Dan and herself is a bit rough, but they manage. Now I'm going to re-listen to Bob Tom Denton's story, because he's to funny.

Before I close this off, I do have to mentions Anne Fields reading of It Had to Be You; she does a fantastic job. I love how she reads this story. She does a great job with male voices and female ones, and you definitely can tell the difference.

Drive You Wild by Jennifer Bernard (Review)

Finished Drive You Wild by Jennifer Bernard. If you have been following the series you would know remember Trever Stark, as being an ass. He's not the friendliest guy, but the ladies love him. However, there is a good reason why he's the ice man, and they actually don't stem from baseball even though he's keeps a cool head on the game. Yes, our good boy Trevor has secret past that he would like to keep out of the spotlight, and it explains a lot about his antics. Of course, he starts to melt when he encounters Paige Taylor. Now Paige knows how to wiggle into someone skin, because she's like a marshmallow, all soft and mushy. Being a marshmallow isn't a bad thing, because the world needs marshmallow people.

These two were fun together. I mean they try to avoid each for a few chapters of the book. I mean Paige is coming off a divorce and isn't too found of athletes, not only that her father has warn her away from Stark. Once Trevor realizes Paige is Crush's daughter, he tries to avoid her. However, that isn't the easiest thing to keep a moth from a flame. Saying that these to are hot for one another is an understatement.

Trevor is definitely an onion. However, I did like how Sadie described him as an iceberg, but you don't see what is underneath iceberg. He's actually a pretty amazing guy. Paige, what's not to love. As I said she's like a marshmallow. She has this ability to let people open up and unburden their burdens. I have to say, it makes Trevor a little jealous at times, even though Paige only has eyes for Trevor. Liked these two together. They seem to bring out the best out each other.

Overall, I liked Drive You Wild, because Paige and Trevor. Trevor makes this story, because you get to know him more than the ice man. The ending is a quick clean up of all the drama that happen in the story. I hope that Stark's sister gets with Jim Leiberman. Anyway, hope there is more A Love Between the Bases books. If you haven't read the previous books, you don't need to worry, but you will see how he was before Paige.

Tasty Book Tours Q&A + Review + Excerpt + Giveaway: Love of the Game by Lori Wilde

Lori, thanks for taking the time to chat with us today!

Your new release, LOVE OF THE GAME is the third in the Stardust, Texas Series, which features some very handsome baseball playing heroes. What kind of research goes into writing a new series, especially a series with professional sports involved?
Hi, thank you for having me. Whenever I start a new book, I do some preliminary research on the setting, the background, and the characters’ occupation. Then I dive into writing. If something comes up during the writing that I don’t know the answer to, I’ll stop and do some quick research. Then once I finish the first draft and jump into revisions, I’ll look for plot hole and missing pieces of research at that point too. Research can involve Internet searches, talking to people in the professions I’m researching, watching TV programs, going to the library, attending an event, or even hands on learning.

You are probably most well known for your Twilight Texas Series, along with the Jubilee Texas Series (my favorite) and the more recent, Cupid Texas Series. Do you have one series or set of characters that was your favorite to write? Even a couple? Or one title that took the most out of you emotionally to write?
The most taxing title for me to write was CHRISTMAS AT TWILIGHT, which features characters struggling with mental illness. Several members of my family have struggled with mental disorders. This book took an emotional as I had to put myself back into heart-wrenching situations I’d experienced. But, it was also very cathartic.

What many readers might not know about you is that you taught a romance course online, which was not only so informative but very personal when it came to feedback and critique. (I took the class and LOVED IT). If you have ONE piece of advice for aspiring romance writers, what would that be?
Thanks for the compliment. I love to teach writing. I’m actually teaching a class like that again in October through Writers University. https://writeruniv.wordpress.com

My one piece of advice is to get the book done. Just write it. Then write another one and another one. That’s what it takes. Consistent production.

I read that you are newly certified as a yoga instructor. What have you found to be the biggest benefit by doing yoga? Do you think that it has helped with your creativity when it comes to writing?
The benefits of yoga have been nothing short of life altering. Yoga has given me my health, sanity and creativity back. I’d lost myself in work and forgotten who I was. Yoga brought me back to me. I’m calmer, healthier, more balanced. It helps me lead a better life.

What are you working on next? Another Stardust Romance or are you venturing into a new series? Visiting an older series?
I’m going back to Cupid, Texas to write about four brothers from a ranching dynasty and the four Native American sisters they fall in love with.

Thank you again for taking the time to chat!

Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (Review)

Can I say how much I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips Natural Born Charmer! Seriously, this was indescribable. LOVE Dean and Blue! Anna Fields does an amazing job with this book. With so many characters that appear in this book, she was able to give each of them their own voice. With that said, I think I should go into more detail on each of those characters that are pretty important to the story.

Dean Robillard: Quarterback for Chicago Stars. He's kind of not sure what to do become happy. He felt that he had to get out of Chicago. Nothing like a road trip. He was feeling down till he met Blue Bailey.

Blue Bailey: Is a walking disaster. I mean when we first meet her she's walking on the highway in a beaver costume without it's head. I busted a gut. Tears were streaming down when Blue and Dean have their first encounter. Brilliant!

April Robillard/Susan O'Hare: Dean's mother. Very strain relationship at the beginning of the story, but eventually they work things out.

Riley Patriot: Half-sister to Dean. Decides to run away to Dean's house hoping he will want her around.

Jack Patriot: Dean's father. Rocker and didn't care much while Dean was growing up. Even more strain relationship than his mother.

Anita Garrison: The Mayor of Garrison. Wealthy. Kind of hates the town, but has good reason. Shows that she truly loves Blue, but that relationship takes some time to grow.

Of course we have the good people of Garrison who would love to see the town to grow, but Anita stands in the way.

Anyway, I loved every moment of the story, and there is sooooo much going on Natural Born Charmer. I love the banter between Dean and Blue. Blue keeps Dean on his toes and he has no clue how to handle her. They both see each other for who they truly are. She even helps Dean mend his relationship with his family, which is not the easiest task. This had me laughing out loud throughout most of the story. Tears, I tell you. However, there are moments where I did get a choked up on Blue's behalf. She does have rotten luck until she gets to Garrison. This story was so good I had to listen to the story again. I might have to get a physical copy of this book, because again it's that good. I can't wait to read/listen to other Chicago Stars books. They are worth the read. Run and get this book, and I normally don't say things like that. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Natural Born Charmer. If you are in need to find something that is going to put you in a good mood, check this book out.

Audiobook: True Love and Other Disasters by Rachel Gibson

As I have been cleaning a few areas of my house, I have decided I would listen to a book instead of music. I decided to listen to Rachel Gibson's True Love and Other Disasters. So, lets meet the characters.

We have Faith Duffy, who went from stripper to bunny (Playboy) to trophy wife to widow. Which is a lot of changes to go through in her life after all she's only 30 years old. However, most people would assume she's a gold digger, I did. There is more to Faith than the bombshell beauty who capture the attention of an 80 year old man. She did care for Virgil. When she found out that she had inherited a hockey team, she couldn't believe it. She planned to sell the team to Virgil's sniveling son. It just didn't pan out for Landon. Yet, Faith's character impressed me. I personally would have looked for another buyer for the team than Virgil's a-hole of a son, but that's besides the point. She kept the team and an she was more than just a blond bombshell. She learned at a young age that she need to have a thick skin. It's not always easy.

Next we have Ty Savage, the captain of the Chinooks. He's handsome and great hockey player, plus he's worried about his team. Especially, when Mrs. Duffy decides to keep the team. Faith doesn't know much about hockey. Fortunately, she finds a manager that is willing to help her. That's not the only problem Ty has against Faith, it's all due to the fact he has a hard-on for the woman. Complicates a mess of issues.

Basically, we have Faith not sure why Ty can't stand her and is angry with her all the time. She's trying to be the best owner that she can be. We have all this sexual tension building between the two of them. Which makes a pretty good story.

Overall, True Love and Other Disasters was a pretty good listen. I enjoyed the story overall, but I was a little disappointed with the ending. Yes, they manage to have a happy ending, but I just didn't feel like they put Landon in his place. It felt like you assumed he was put in his place. Oh well. Yet, I enjoyed the growth of character Faith had endured, cause you get the feeling that she didn't know who she was at the beginning of the story and she slowly came into her own. I liked that she started to believe in herself. Ty is Ty. He kind of was struggle to like. He was so judgmental of Faith and pretty much thought her as ding bat. It wasn't until he got to know her that I started to like him.

Now the narration: I struggled at the beginning of the book. I felt that the narrater was a bit breathy most of the times. It felt a little over dramatic. When it feels like she's pausing too often and taking too long. There was a couple of times there were accents I felt didn't fit the character or I wanted her to pick. When Faith got nervous it sounded like she had a southern accent, which is not possible because she's from Nevada. However, her breathy reading did provide great sex scenes. Overall, she did an okay job.
