American Ella Durran has had the same plan for her life since she was thirteen: Study at Oxford. At 24, she’s finally made it to England on a Rhodes Scholarship when she’s offered an unbelievable position in a rising political star’s presidential campaign. With the promise that she’ll work remotely and return to DC at the end of her Oxford year, she’s free to enjoy her Once in a Lifetime Experience. That is, until a smart-mouthed local who is too quick with his tongue and his car ruins her shirt and her first day.

When Ella discovers that her English literature course will be taught by none other than that same local, Jamie Davenport, she thinks for the first time that Oxford might not be all she’s envisioned. But a late-night drink reveals a connection she wasn’t anticipating finding and what begins as a casual fling soon develops into something much more when Ella learns Jamie has a life-changing secret.

Immediately, Ella is faced with a seemingly impossible decision: turn her back on the man she’s falling in love with to follow her political dreams or be there for him during a trial neither are truly prepared for. As the end of her year in Oxford rapidly approaches, Ella must decide if the dreams she’s always wanted are the same ones she’s now yearning for.

My Thoughts:

I normally don't read Women's Fic, because it tends to put me in a funk. Most of the time they are depressing, partly because it's like an unwritten rule that someone must die. Seriously, so depressing. However, My Oxford Year book blurb intrigued me. I mean we have a young woman bound for adventure as she attends Oxford when she gets an unbelievable opportunity. So, she's starts juggling dreams. When she runs into a local who turns her life upside down. Yes, I took a chance on My Oxford Year, and I can't hide the fact that I read the last chapters of the book before I precede with reading said book. For reals, I wasn't going to read a book with a depressing ending. Nope, I wasn't even going to go there. However, the ending gave me hope, so I proceeded with caution. Again it's a Women's Fic, I wasn't going to take a chance on a depressing storyline.

Fortunately, My Oxford Year was pretty much about Ella Durran taking her chances in Oxford, and ended up finding marvelous friends along the way. Also, she gets to know Jamie Davenport. They definitely have a bumpy start, I mean he almost runs her over and he dumps fish and chips on her. Yes, she starts to fall for posh prat. Actually, My Oxford Year is a beautifully written story about a girl taking a chance on life and decided what road she will maintain. Plus, it's about life and how you never know what's around the corner. I think this would make a wonderful movie. Yes, it's a moving story with it's ups and downs, but in the end we find a young woman experiencing a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience to choosing to experience life. Yes, My Oxford Year will give you the feelies. Great selection for a book club read.
