Redemption of the Duke by Gayle Callen

For the past couple of days I haven't been feeling well. Fortunately, I was able to finish Redemption of the Duke by Gayle Callen. The Redemption of the Duke is the third book in the Brides of Redemption books. By the way, don't have to worry about reading the previous books to read this book. Redemption of the Duke can be read as a stand alone. Anyway, my thoughts on the story.

At the beginning, we meet Adam Chamberlin who happens to be the Duke of Rothford. Now Adam has been looking for a friend's sister, so he can rectify a wrong in the past. Once Adam finds Faith Cooper, she basically forgives him and tells him she doesn't need any help. So, Adam manipulates the situation in a way that forces Faith to accept his help.

Overall, Redemption of the Duke is a pretty easy going read. The conflict in the story pretty much dissolved by the time we get to the end. Honestly, I wouldn't consider Adam a real rake, because he kind of became that way to live up to his brothers expectations. Deep down Adam was a decent guy, who wants to do what's right. So, Adam faces his inner conflict finding his true self. Faith was an all right character. At times she was just so focus on trying to do things for herself. There were a couple of characters I just wanted to throat punch, for instance Adam mother and his sister-in-law. In the long run, Redemption of the Duke is a nice read. Nothing too exciting or memorable about the story, but the story is well written. So, if you are looking for an easy going read, you might consider Redemption of  the Duke.

A Month Behind in Celebrating my Blogaversary

Well, it has been two years since I started What I'm Reading. Within those two years I have learned a lot and still learning. Still not as big as some of the blogs, but I'm okay with that. I still have to remind myself that I started this blog for myself. Mainly I wanted to keep track of all the books I have read. I'm amazed on how many books I have read within the two year span. I want to thank those who were willing to take a chance on me and willing to let them review their books.

I guess this would be a good opportunity to share somethings I have learn over the course of two years:

1) Learn what the publishing houses produce and what imprint they use for certain lines.

The past couple weeks I have been glancing at people reviews and seeing what they didn't like about the book. Yes, I tend to look at the one and two star reviews more often than the five. Here is why: Do they have a valid point or just trying to knock someone down a peg or two? More times or not it's something ridiculous. For instance: "It was too graphic in the sex." Then I will check the publisher and imprint. I just want to say "DUH!" See check the imprint and publishing house and this way you won't be surprise on what you're reading.

2) Learn what you like.

You are not doing anyone any favors by reading something you don't like. Unless you can be completely impartial, don't do it. When I started I tried to try knew things and it just was a waste of my time. Plus, I'm not helping anyone, because I already have developed a bias already. Plus I have learn you tend to put off the book if you are not a fan of that particular style or genre.

3) Be Honest.

Honestly, I hate when people add at the end of their review saying they got this copy free and this is their honest review of the book. Frankly, I would hope you are honest even if you got the book for free. Yes, I will put at the end of my reviews that I got a review copy from so & so, but I would like to think that I was completely honest in my thoughts.

4) A Book is not always for everyone.

I know this is hard to acknowledge at times, but it's true. You may have read one book and think it's the best book in the world, while someone may have not had the same experience as you did. I know that sometimes that is hard to swallow. You just needed to swallow your pride and suck it up. Not everyone is going to love the book the same way as you do or hate the book the same way you do.

5) Have Fun.

I think sometimes we get bogged down with everything that we try to do with the blog. Sometimes it maybe overwhelming, and those are times to step back and breathed. If you forget to post a blog post the world will still keep on turning. Just posted when you remember it. Trust me the world will not end if it doesn't make it on time. Aim to try again.

These are things I have learned over the two year span. Will the next year be the same? Who knows. Will I have more things to add to my list? Not sure. I hope I will be trucking along.

Tangled by Emma Chase

A few days ago I finished Tangled by Emma Chase. As you all well know, I take part in HEA Book Club. This month's selection was Tangled. Of course, I didn't finished in time to post my review before book club. By the way, you can always look back at the chats on Harlequin Junkie. Anyway, I finished the book right after book club and by the way loved it. However, I held off on my review, because I thought it would be a good idea to wait till the next day. Well, I ended up with cold, and unlike the main character I was really sick. Which is the reason I had to postpone my review.

First off, Tangled is a hilarious read. You meet Drew who is flat on his ass depress, because he let the girl he love go. Of course, he doesn't realize this until he starts telling the reader his story. Let me just say, I thought it was creative of the author to tell the story from Drew POV. Not only that it felt like you were hanging out with Drew as he tells the events that lead up to his crown and glory of being a moron. Drew's major flaw is he's a player and believes he's gods gift to women. Yes, a major flaw in all players. He doesn't know how to handle when a woman rejects his advances. Of course, he works hard to win over Katherine Brooks. He finally gets his chance with Kate and he messes up the good thing by being his idiot self. Now he has to work twice as hard to win her back.

Overall, Tangled is a witty fun read. Yes, Drew is a bit crass, but he tells it like he sees. After all he's a player. For example, here is Drew at his finest:
"For those ladies out there who are listening, let me give you some free advice: If a guy who just met at a club calls you baby, sweetheart, angel, or any other generic endearment? Don't make the mistake of thinking he's so into you, he's already thinking up pet names.
It's because he can't or doesn't care to remember your actual name."
The book is filled more words of wisdom from Drew. So, if you don't mind a little crass from a guy telling you how he screwed up his relationship, you might want to give Drew a try. I'm telling you he might be worth a ride in Tangled.

Blog Tour + Review + Giveaway: Betting the Billionaire by Avery Flynn

Book Blurb:

If that man calls her one more time…

So what if Gabe Campos is a model-dating billionaire who gets Keisha Jacobs hotter than a Ferrari’s engine on the straightaway? He keeps pushing her to sell her family’s furniture business, but she’ll never give in—not unless she wants to give her father a second heart attack.

All Gabe should be thinking about is how he’ll finally get revenge on the man who killed his father. But when he meets the man’s daughter, Keisha, instead of focusing on destroying Jacobs Fine Furnishings, he can’t get her warm-whisky voice out of his mind.

Forced by a snow storm to spend the night together, their passion ignites. The next day, however, it’s back to business. The only way Keisha can save her family is to win a bet with the billionaire. But neither realized their hearts are part of the bargain…

My Thoughts:

You know how sometimes a novella has you aching for more and other times it was nice quick read. Well, Betting the Billionaire is the latter. Don't get me wrong it wasn't a bad read and the writing was good. However, I just didn't connect with the characters. I happen to enjoy a revenge plot. However, I just didn't feel like there was enough bitterness for a revenge plot. A lot of the story stems from not knowing all the facts. I like Keisha and loyalty to her family. Gabe, well he just didn't really do anything for me. Overall, Betting the Billionaire wasn't a bad read, just didn't grab me.

Author Bio:

Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.
