Once She Was Tempted by Anne Barton

Staying up way past my bedtime, I finished Once She Was Tempted by Anne Barton, which is the second book in Honeycote books. By the way I don't recommend, however, it was a pretty good book. So, let's get on with my thoughts.

Basically, Once She Was Tempted is about Daphne Honeycote going out into society and possibly making a brilliant match, after all her sister did. Well, Benjamin Elliot, earl of Foxburn, doesn't want her setting her cap on his friend, because of a scandalous portrait she did a sometime ago. Now she's distraught because one of the portrait is technically out in society, and she needs to find the other one. She enlists the help Ben to find the other.

First off, I did enjoy Once She Was Tempted. Personally, I believe it takes a strong person to do whatever it takes to save someone they love. Daphne does have a good heart, if she didn't she would have sacrifice her reputation to try to save her mother by posing in such a scandalous manner. Plus, she honestly never believe her behavior could come to haunt her. It was probably more like bad luck that Ben happen to be the keeper of one of portraits.

I did like Ben. He's a bit rough around the edges, but he does care a lot for his friends and would do anything to ensure they are happy. Even if he tends throw himself a pity-party. Yes, Ben return from the war a damage man physically and mentally. He tends to believe that no one want the broken man he happens to be. Whenever he's around Daphne, she tends to bring sunshine to his life and he doesn't really realize the gem he has until it's almost too late.

Overall, I found Once She Was Tempted a delightful read. Yes, you have a wounded hero and a heroine who always looks on the bright side. She manages to still be cheerful with her impending doom, by the way takes strength. So, if you are looking for a story with a scandalous lady and a wounded hero, you might try Once She Was Tempted.

Darkness Awakened by Katie Reus

So, I spent most of my day reading Darkness Awakened by Katie Reus. This is her new story and the start of a new series. First off, I do enjoy Katie writing, but I just had a hard time getting into the story. So, let me give my thoughts:

We meet Lyra Marius who happens to be a "blood-born" vampire. Which is basically, "Rare vampire who'd been born to this life, not turned". Now Lyra is looking for her daughter, because she ran off and ended up getting capture. Lyra has been fearing this for sometime, because of a vampire prophecy:

"A vampire named Kush prophesied that fifteen years after two powerful lines created life, the sun would go dark across the entire planet in the middle of the day. When that happens. the progeny of those two lines will have the power to completely open the games of hell with their blood and spill terror onto the planet once again."

Now that sounds pretty bad, and you can understand why Lyra needs to find her daughter. So, she turns to Finn Stavros for help. Well, this werewolf pack leader use to be something special to Lyra until he broke her heart. Now she needs his help to find her daughter since Lyra doesn't really have anyone to turn too.

Darkness Awakened has a lot of potential. Plus, it's not your typical vampire and shifter story, which makes for an interesting read. I did like how Lyra turn to Finn for help, because deep down she knew would help. I was impress that Finn didn't go ballistic when he found out he had a child. Overall, it was pretty easy going reading with a little action. As I said that towards it did pick up a bit towards the end and I curious on what's going to happen to a few of the characters in the series. I wonder if the demons will make an appearance again or will the human race be in perils again and need the help of vampires and shifters? Now I have to wait and see. So, if you like vampires and shifters, you might like Darkness Awakened.

Exploring the October Issue of BTS Book Review Magazine

Join us and explore the October issue of BTS Book Reviews magazine. Our featured cover author is Victoria Danann and here is a little
taste of her feature.

Question: Share with us a little about your current release and your next release.

Victoria: Gathering Storm, is the fifth installment in my serial saga just released
September 19.

This series is a little different from what readers are used to because
it’s an ongoing story – not in the sense of cliffhanging endings. Each book does tell its
own story complete with ending, but the next begins where the last ended. That’s why
each book comes with a strong recommendation for reading in order.
The first four books were loosely based on themes of fairy tales or beloved
stories, i.e., Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, The Pied Piper, and Little Red Riding
Hood. These tales are situated against a backdrop of modern day knights and heroes,
witches, elves, berserkers, psychics, demons, vampires, werewolves, and more. While
that may sound silly or juvenile, or both, I assure you the series is neither.

Dark Angel: A Gothic Fairy Tale by T.J. Bennett

Yesterday I finished Dark Angel: A Gothic Fairy by T. J. Bennett. Let me first tell you that it's a Gothic story by all accounts that make a Gothic story what they are. Yes, it does have the air of gloominess and mystery, which are key elements to a Gothic romance. To say the least Dark Angel: A Gothic Fairy wouldn't a light easy read. Oh no, mystery and intrigue would be your best bet.

The story wouldn't be complete without a strong and equally stubborn heroine. At the beginning, we don't see Catherine Briton as this strong and stubborn woman until the story start to progress. She starts to realize that she can never leave island. Where there is a strong and equally stubborn woman there must be an even more strong and equally stubborn man. After all, our heroine can't have no willy-nilly hero, Gerard. Now Gerard is the master of this mysterious island that Catherine has landed on.

A masterfully written story with dark undertones that will captive the imaginations of most readers. Yes, Dark Angel: A Gothic Fairy tale isn't your walk through the park kind of read. However, a visually stunning read even if it's a dark read. Those who are drawn to Beauty and the Beast kind of stories will find Dark Angel: A Gothic Story an interesting take of that particular fairytale.

Overall, I found Dark Angel: A Gothic Fairy Tale a marvelous read, but taxing. This story isn't for the faint of heart (more like those who love happy stories). Granted the story does have a happy ending, but it's a little darker and the sun isn't going to magically appear and the story becomes bright and cheery. Not going to happen, so if you don't mind a story that leads you into a little gloom, you might enjoy Dark Angel: A Gothic Fairy Tale
